Landscaping & construction / South Wales
Gardens built from the ground up.
Porcelain patios, composite decking, fencing, artificial grass and brickwork. Dug out, built up and laid properly, from the first spade to the last slab.
01 / Before & after
From this, to this.
Most gardens we’re asked about start out muddy, overgrown or simply unusable. Each of these was photographed before we began and once we’d finished.

Radyr. A new-build plot with over 40 tonnes dug out to level it. Rasa White porcelain, artificial grass and a stone-clad planter.

03 / Underneath
The part you won’t see decides how long it lasts.
A patio looks the same on day one whether it’s laid well or badly. The difference turns up in year three. So the effort goes in below the surface: ground dug out and prepped, a firm base, drainage where it’s needed, and only then the finish.
- 1
Surface
Large-format porcelain, Trex decking or turf. The bit you chose from the sample.
- 2
Bedding
The thin layer every slab is set into, so it sits flat and stays put.
- 3
Sub-base
Compacted stone, built up in layers. This is what stops a patio sinking.
- 4
Membrane
Keeps the ground and the stone from mixing, and the weeds out.
- 5
Formation
The natural ground, dug out and prepared. Often the hardest day of the job.
